Australian designers in Biennale spotlight

The Venice Biennale is the world’s oldest and most prestigious biennale of international contemporary art. Since 1988 Australian artists have exhibited in a space designed by Phillip Cox and in 2015 we will see the opening of the new $7.5m pavilion designed by Melbourne-based architects, Denton Corker Marshall.
As the first nation to be granted permission to create anew among the Biennale’s heritage-listed buildings, architect John Denton intends the pavilion to be “simple, flexible and striking… memorable, powerful, singular, timeless and yet somewhat enigmatic”.
With the opening to coincide with the 56th Venice Biennale in May, Stylecraft is proud to have partnered with the Australia Council to supply Australian-designed and manufactured furniture from within its product offering for the new space. In the opening week of the Biennale tens of thousands of curators, exhibitors, buyers and investors in contemporary art from all around the world will visit the Australian pavilion, and with products by local designers such as Ross Gardam, Alexander Lotersztain, Helen Kontouris, Jon Goulder and Stuart Williams, it is an incredible international platform to showcase Australian design.
The 2015 Biennale will see artist Fiona Hall exhibit in the new space but with all eyes set on the new pavilion in the Giardini, the spotlight will be on Australia not only throughout this year’s event but also into the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale. The opening of the new pavilion stands as a significant opportunity to be involved at the highest level of thought, research and design in Australia and to put our local design talent in the international spotlight.
