Say hello to Australia's largest performing arts centre
Norwegian design practice Snøhetta and Brisbane-based Blight Rayner Architecture have been chosen to design Brisbane’s theatre that will become the largest performing arts centre in Australia.
The winning proposal for the Queensland Performing Arts Centre by the two practices features a $150 million theatre addition.

The heritage-listed building first opened its doors as the Queensland Culture Centre in 1985, originally designed by Brisbane architects Robin Gibson and Partners. The new addition by the aforementioned practices will feature a glass façade to usher in the new while respecting the site’s history and context.
The addition will include a new foyer and two new studio spaces. Jackie Trad, the deputy premier and member for South Brisbane said that the project is expected to “deliver capacity for an extra 260 performances annually” and will welcome an additional 300,000 patrons each year. The design also draws inspiration from the cultural significant of South Bank (Brisbane River) to First Nations Peoples.
Construction is set to begin in 2020 with a completion date of 2022.
