Perth Children’s Hospital, completed by Australian firm Cox Architecture, has been short-listed for the Best Use of Colour in commercial design prize at this year’s World Architecture Festival.
Judged by 148 judges from over 50 countries, the winner will be announced at the Festival, which is to be held in Amsterdam in December. The hospital, which opened in 2018, is also shortlisted in the Completed Buildings: Health category.
The 274-bed children’s hospital was completed in collaboration with JCY Architects and Urban Designers and Billard Leece Partnership with HKS Inc.
COX Design Director Fernando Faugno said “We use colour in the hospital to both surprise and distract. For those arriving at night, the illuminated façade and artwork, The Fizz, instantly identifies the hospital and creates a visual wonderland for everyone driving past.”
Designed “from the child’s’ perspective”, the interiors use colour and form to create an atmosphere of positivity and hope, taking inspiration from the natural bush-land of the adjacent Kings Park. The colour palette is dominated by calming natural greens and the artworks and installations reference springtime wildflowers. The bold reds and oranges are used sparingly to create nooks, libraries and leisure areas for families.
According to the architects, colour and whimsy have been used to reduce anxiety for patients and carers, and also plays an important role in navigating the building.
Designed to create a family-friendly environment, the hospital features panoramic 270-degree views that allow for an abundance of natural light, and outdoor spaces and private courtyards for patients.
Located in Nedlands, southwest of Perth’s CBD, the hospital was built to replace the 109-year-old Princess Margaret Hospital in Subiaco. The construction took eight years and the final costings were announced at $1.2 billion.
Other nominations in the Best Use of Colour category include Welcome to the Jungle House by CplusC Architectural Workshop in Sydney, Freemans Bay Primary School Redevelopment by RTA Studio in Auckland and Comfort Town by Archimatika in Kyiv, Ukraine.
World Architecture Festival runs from December 4-6.
