New York firm ODA has completed 420 Kent a twisting pixelated apartment development, the first tower of three to be built side-by-side on the riverfront in Brooklyn.
Realising that corner apartments are the most sought-after, the designers segmented the towers to create the maximum amount of corner apartments.
Tower One has 252 apartments and the other two interconnected towers will have 605 once completed, providing a total of 857 apartments across the development.
The architects opted for a unique floor plan, to stand out among the abundance of other tall glass towers in New York.
“The vast majority of towers in NYC are extruded rectangles,” said ODA founder Eran Chen.
“As population density in New York increased, our habitats borrowed from the corporate archetypal towers and took on a similar two-dimensional structure.”
“By using two standard floor plans – mirrors of each other – and flipping them in different directions around the central axis of each tower’s mass, the result is three distinct, multi-dimensional facades, each filled with mid-floor ‘corner’ units,” the firm explained.
By shifting the floor plan and utilising cantilevering, garden terraces have been created for the majority of units and spaces are filled with natural light.
The 2- storey buildings will have studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments with rents starting at $2350 (USD) a month.
Twenty percent will be city-regulated affordable housing and eighty percent of the units will be in a corner configuration.
The project also incorporates a revamp of the boardwalk at ground level.
“For years, South Williamsburg’s massive potential has gone unrealised,” said ODA. “Now, 420 Kent will be joining a larger swell of development through which the neglected waterfront is finally being reclaimed.”
Interiors feature floor-to-ceiling windows, kitchens with oak flooring, caesarstone countertops, ceramic backsplashes, a Bertazzoni gas range, a Bosch dishwasher and a washer and dryer.
Residents will have access to two rooftop swimming pools, a fitness centre, landscaped rooftop garden with lounge seating, a coffee bar in the lobby, and a billiards and gaming room.
