Mirvac will build three new apartment towers in its Green Square mega-project having received a green light from the City of Sydney.
The developer will partner with Landcom, the NSW government’s land and property development organisation, to bring 316 new apartments to Green Square town centre’s $13 billion regeneration.
Seven four-storey luxury contemporary terraces are also part of the latest expansion, located on the edge of Zetland’s heritage area at 77-93 Portman Street.
Building A will rise 23 storeys and contain 152 apartments, while Building B and Building C will both rise 13 storeys and contain 119 and 45 units respectively. Plans had been initially submitted for 390 apartments but were downsized in order to gain approval.
“We are thrilled to secure development approval for the next stage of the Green Square Town Centre,” Mirvac chief executive Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz said.
“This stage will raise the bar in apartment living, taking luxury to new heights with exceptionally designed homes, retail and communal spaces.
“As the newest town centre for the City of Sydney in one hundred years, our attention to detail and focus on quality will ensure a vibrant community that stands the test of time for generations to come.”
The new complex will have ground-floor retail space and a new pedestrian laneway connecting main streets.
A nine storey green wall will be built on the main tower, and in line with the project’s green strategy there will be concrete planters and terrace planters. The outdoor recreational ‘podium’ on level two of the towers will have a large number of heat resistant native plants.
“Each building responds to its individual context yet is integrated with the whole,” the architects explained.
“GS15 is four diverse but related buildings, designed by two architectural practices, with one integrated design approach.
“GS15 is authentic, original and relevant; the real thing…(it) stands for honest and durable materials, inviting homes, authentic places for people and distinctive original design.”
Green Square spans 278 hectares in Sydney’s East and is expected to be home to 61,000 people by 2030. Currently 104 ‘affordable’ homes are slated to be built for key workers.
Over the next 10 years it will receive $540 million in contributions from the City of Sydney.
The Drying Green is its new public park, taking its name from the area’s industrial heritage. It is expected to be delivered in 2021
Earlier in the year Green Square became the first local government in NSW to receive a 6-Star Green Star rating.
“We set out to make Green Square an exemplary model for sustainable, high density living in Sydney by embedding green infrastructure into our planning,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
“Because of this commitment, Green Square town centre features one of Australia’s largest urban stormwater recycling schemes, as well as tree-lined, low-speed streets and extra-wide footpaths, self-watering rain gardens, separated cycleways, and LED street lights.
“In Green Square, we’ve shown that high density living can be created with environmental, social and economic sustainability in mind and this award is a fantastic recognition of our efforts.”
