Italian designer puts pastel twist on pop art bathware collection

Italian design firm Marcante Testa has created a line of deluxe bathroom fixtures for ex.t that looks like it popped out of American pop art.

Inspired by the Entablatures painting series by Roy Lichtenstein, the Frieze range instead uses a more subdued pastel palette than pop art’s bold colours.

According to the firm, there is a large degree of flexibility and customisation inherent with the range and “the combination of different shapes, colours, finishes and materials allows a lot of unique and original combinations.”

“The project is articulated through different levels of signs, materials and colours where the washbasin stars as the central element of the bathroom to organise the accessory elements. The architectural approach of the designers involves the entire spatial dimension of the bathroom: the position of the sink is defined from a central wall strip, the upper and a lower part of the wall can be covered in different materials, creating space to install the mirror, shelves, furniture and towel hooks,” Marcanta Teste said.

The collection was debuted at the Maison&Objet furniture fair in Paris in mid-January.

Lichtenstein’s Entablatures paintings are made up of horizontal layers and patterns and were inspired by the details of classicist building facades.

Marcante Testa’s collection has similar geometry in its range of three washbasins, which come in colours including bright turquoise, lilac and soft pink.

The sinks sit against a horizontal band for accessories like minimalist hooks and shelves to be hung on.

They can be freestanding or above a cubed cabinet that is available in lacquered wood or marble.

Three main styles have been designed; Frieze One High and the Frieze One Low both have a crisscross pattern and Ex.t describes them as being akin to the basins of old washhouses.

Finally the Frieze Two Lined is larger with vertical grooves in its facade and also comes in Calacatta marble.
