In a stunning fusion of cultural inspiration and contemporary design, UAE-based architecture and design studio Roar has crafted a mesmerizing display of recurring stairs for Jaipur Rugs’ inaugural showroom in Dubai.
This creative endeavour takes place within a 780 sqm warehouse nestled in the heart of Alserkal Avenue, Dubai’s vibrant creative district, representing a remarkable transformation that pays homage to the rich history and culture of Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Jaipur Rugs, a company with a 45-year legacy in the rug industry, entrusted Roar with the task of converting the warehouse into a showroom that would not only showcase their exquisite rugs but also serve as a tribute to Jaipur, often referred to as the Pink City. This historic city, renowned for its distinctive ancestral architecture and vibrant pink and terracotta colour palette, was granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2019.
Roar’s design approach for the Jaipur Rugs showroom in Dubai was nothing short of enchanting. Drawing inspiration from Jaipur’s architectural vernacular, which prominently features recurring stairs and arches, the studio embarked on a creative journey to infuse these elements into the showroom’s aesthetic. The result is a captivating display of recurring stairs that immediately transport visitors to the heart of Jaipur’s architectural wonders.
The use of recurring stairs not only adds a sense of rhythm and harmony to the space but also serves as a visual metaphor for Jaipur Rugs’ enduring commitment to craftsmanship and tradition. The juxtaposition of contemporary design and traditional motifs creates an atmosphere that is both timeless and modern, allowing customers to immerse themselves in the world of rugs while appreciating the cultural context from which they originate.
Moreover, the colour palette chosen by Roar for the showroom reflects the hues of Jaipur, with shades of pink and terracotta seamlessly integrated into the design scheme. The Jaipur Rugs Dubai Showroom at Alserkal unfolds into two main areas. On the ground floor, visitors enter a vast open-plan space with spectacular floor-to-ceiling rug displays evoking Jaipur’s stepwells on three of its walls. Embedded in the decor, Roar has imagined a series of niches entirely upholstered with carpets, with each alcove echoing the hues found on the adjacent stairs, forming an incredible colour gradient that presents the rugs as art pieces in their own right.
Alongside a string of ‘rug libraries’, which showcase products through custom-made sliding panels, two fully immersive rooms – the Sapphire and Emerald rooms – have been dedicated to the brand’s acclaimed Manchaha collections, where visitors can admire rugs produced by Jaipur Rugs’ artisans as part of the company’s social enterprise initiative that gives weavers the creative freedom to design their rugs.
‘Every design starts with a story. Here the genesis was the city of Jaipur and its remarkable aesthetic. After our initial meeting with Jaipur Rugs, it soon became apparent that the company’s birthplace and home city was a tremendous and endless source of inspiration for them so it felt essential to also reference it in our interior design,’ shares Nikita Chellani, Lead Interior Designer at Roar
Pallavi Dean, Founder and Creative Director of Roar, continues: ‘We alluded to Jaipur’s most emblematic spaces in a playful, contemporary manner. A key component that kept returning in our research was the city’s ponds – water has a special significance in Hindu mythology, believed to be a boundary between heaven and earth – for centuries, the stepped ponds have played a significant role in functioning as traditional water systems, as well as being hubs of social and cultural interactions. Transposed into an interior setting, this element brings a very special spacial experience for the visitor. At the same time, we pay homage to the elaborate classical Indian painted surfaces and crafts by recreating a rich, textural decor.’
This harmonious blend of colours, shapes, and cultural references creates an immersive and captivating experience for showroom visitors.
Roar’s design for Jaipur Rugs’ showroom in Dubai stands as a testament to the power of architecture and design to bridge the gap between cultures and eras. By incorporating the recurring stairs and arches of Jaipur’s architectural heritage, Roar has transformed a warehouse into a captivating space that not only showcases exquisite rugs but also celebrates the enduring legacy of Jaipur’s Pink City.
