A Space Defined by Heritage, Context and Exemplary Craftsmanship

Gaggenau Sydney marks the next chapter in the brand’s 340-year-old history.

Nestled in the heart of Sydney’s inner-city, tree-lined suburb of Surry Hills, Gaggenau Sydney welcomes all to experience its prestige firsthand.

Created in collaboration with long-time architect partner 1zu33, Gaggenau Sydney moves towards an intrinsic connection to place – grounding itself within its context and local influence, evident in all its elements. Taking inspiration from Gaggenau’s relationship to the culinary arts and the hospitality landscape that defines Surry Hills, the space works to invite the vibrant design community to immerse themselves within the exceptional history of the brand.

“Gaggenau Sydney signifies the expansive global reach of our ethos,” says Andrew Jones, CEO of Australia and New Zealand for Gaggenau.

“Our flagships across the world emphasise the expert performance of our portfolio while creating intimate worlds that embody each city at its core. The new space further grounds Gaggenau as an industry leader within the Sydney community, engaging architects, designers, enthusiasts and distinguished identities alike.”

“By opening the doors of Gaggenau Sydney, we re-introduce our passion for luxury embedded within our DNA and the brand’s unrivalled history as global leaders in culinary excellence. Here, we assert Gaggenau as an exemplar of international appeal.”

A post office in its former life, the 260sqm heritage building allowed for a unique approach to layout. Gaggenau Sydney is split into two primary sections, one facing the street and the other setting deeper into the space, opening up to an expansive inner courtyard – a coveted rarity in Surry Hills. The approach was to create an experience that seamlessly co-exists with the surrounding architecture of the suburb while maintaining an application-driven focus throughout the project.

“As a global brand, it’s imperative to create a handshake with every culture we appear in,” founder and SEO of 1zu33 Hendrik Muller notes.

“The new flagship concept looks at buildings with a tighter connection to the city it’s located in. Gaggenau Sydney represents the characteristics of its context, offering distinct elements throughout the design that draw from its surroundings and are infused with the brand’s authentic manner. Emotional consistency, the way spaces feel across the globe, should be shared; however, they should always be interpreted in a way that enables locals to connect with the presentation of Gaggenau.

Upon entrance, visitors are greeted with a deeply assertive exhibition space titled ‘The Social Hub’, adorned in a dark, hand-applied plaster finish, Black Douglas fir boards, lineal textured wall tiles and blackened steel joinery cladding.

While this space is designed for hosting guests and socialising, it takes the opportunity to highlight the design excellence and the value of craftsmanship within Gaggenau appliances. The extensive range is displayed throughout the joinery, offering glimpses of the seamless integration of each appliance within the design.

‘The Home of Gaggenau’ at the rear of the flagship uses a softer palette of oak floorboards and walnut cabinetry, lime wash across the ceiling and expansive stone benchtops to create a space that evokes a sense of comfort as you move through. Situated on the left is an entirely functional chef’s kitchen, displaying Gaggenau’s finest products of the 400 series in motion.

Connecting both rooms is the central core of the Gaggenau heritage – ‘The Difference’. The intimate and low-lit experiential chamber displays iron ore, cobalt and silicium, physical artefacts that reflect the brand’s evolution over the years.

Behind a spy mirror hides a video screen that, when activated, presents a 90-second video that explains Gaggenau’s history, product design process and connection to the culinary landscape. The Difference is a dedicated space to connect guests with the journey of the brand and the materials that define its long-lasting history.

There is a particular focus on the dynamic impact of daylight within the space. Boasting expansive street frontage and floor-to-ceiling windows at the back, natural light enhances the tactility of each surface, instilling life into each material with Gaggenau Sydney. Meticulously paired with controlled lighting, the space imbues a warm atmosphere from sunrise to sunset.

“Gaggenau Sydney represents the intersection of luxury design, exceptional craftsmanship and culinary ingenuity,” expresses Aleks Efeian, Consumer Experience Manager for Gaggenau.

“Each detail comes together to provide a personalised, holistic experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the world of Gaggenau – where tradition meets the avant-garde. The space features touchpoints embodying the brand’s long-lasting history and dedication to craft while celebrating the inspiring breadth of our products.”

The emotional thought behind Gaggenau Sydney creates a distinctly personal experience for each visitor as they feel the performance of each product and find comfort in their excellence.

“For me, it is always about what you take away when you leave,” notes Hendrik. “Gaggenau Sydney embraces a considered design approach – inspired by and deeply embedded in its location. The thoughtful combination of materiality, tone and connection to nature curates an experience that will leave a lasting impression.”

Gaggenau Sydney is located at 543 Crown Street, Surry Hills.
