The 2024 Dulux Colour Awards has once again set a new standard with a record number of entries for the second consecutive year.
From this exceptional pool of submissions, 83 outstanding projects have been selected as finalists, showcasing the pinnacle of innovation and artistry in the realm of colour design in Australia and New Zealand.
The rigorous selection process involved a distinguished panel comprising some of the region’s most esteemed architects and designers. Among them were luminaries such as Shaun Carter, Monique Woodward, Sarosh Mulla, Eva-Marie Prineas, and Nick Travers, each bringing their unique expertise and perspective to evaluate the submissions across various categories.
In the residential domain, 29 finalists emerged from the Residential Interior category, highlighting a trend towards earthy tones that have taken centre stage in contemporary interior design. Olive greens, warm greys, muted taupes, and dusky blues have become instrumental in creating nuanced, sophisticated living spaces where colours are no longer just accents but integral elements in defining ambiance and character.
Furthermore, the Single Residential Exterior category saw the selection of five exceptional projects that exemplify how exteriors are transformed into captivating canvases through thoughtful colour treatments. From subtle neutrals to striking singular hues, architects and designers are pushing boundaries and exploring the full spectrum of possibilities to create immersive and visually engaging environments.
Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour and Communications Manager, speaking on behalf of the judging panel, expressed admiration for the depth of consideration and intelligent design evident in this year’s finalists. Projects ranging from hospitality venues to educational institutions and commercial spaces demonstrated a profound understanding of colour psychology, utilizing shades and tones to enhance functionality, aesthetics, and overall user experience.
Another stylistic direction is the bold use of saturated candy-like colours, clashing and contrasting against one another in projects of all types. “It is an uplifting trend that shows a newfound optimism and confidence to try unexpected combinations for surprising and fun spatial impact,” says Lucena-Orr. “Architects and designers, as well as their clients, seem to have shaken off the gloom of the lockdown years and are expressing a profound sense of freedom through paint colours that epitomise playfulness and joy.”
A notable addition to this year’s awards is the Temporary or Installation Design category, reflecting the evolving landscape of design practices and the increasing emphasis on immersive, experiential installations that leverage colour as a transformative element. “It’s thrilling to see that every surface, every element, inside and out, is being considered in the overall colour scheme when a designer or architect is devising the palette,” says Lucena-Orr.
Overall, the 2024 Dulux Colour Awards finalists showcase the evolution of colour design as a versatile and powerful tool in shaping spatial narratives and elevating the built environment to new heights of creativity and expression. The winners, to be announced soon, are sure to set benchmarks for future innovations in the field of architectural and interior colour design.
