Bernard Dubois redefines Parisian hospitality with Canal Saint-Martin Hotel

Belgian architect Bernard Dubois has transformed the essence of Parisian hospitality with his innovative design for the Bouchardon hotel in the charming Canal Saint-Martin district.

Dubois, known for his distinctive style that blends nostalgic references with contemporary flair, has crafted an experience that transports guests far from the bustling streets of Paris into a world reminiscent of mountain retreats and cinematic landscapes.

The Bouchardon hotel, a boutique aparthotel featuring 11 suites, has undergone a complete makeover under Dubois’ direction. His vision was to create a space that not only serves as a refuge but also exudes an intimate atmosphere, a departure from traditional Parisian aesthetics.

Dubois’ design narrative unfolds through bespoke 1970s-style wooden furniture and interiors that pay homage to mountain hotels. Each suite is equipped with its own kitchen and dining area, offering guests a home away from home experience.

One of the standout features of Dubois’ design is the use of contrasting textures and materials. While wood dominates the initial concept, elements of lacquer add a glossy sheen, creating a harmonious balance throughout the space. The colour palette remains consistent, lending a sense of cohesion and continuity to the interiors.

Dubois’ attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the hotel, from the specially designed furniture crafted by millworkers to the unique terracotta-coloured headboards that serve as focal points in each bedroom. These headboards, with their 1970s-inspired shapes and glossy finish, add a touch of nostalgia while maintaining a contemporary appeal.

Drawing inspiration from mountain hotels and American cinema, Dubois invites guests to immerse themselves in a world reminiscent of Twin Peaks or Colorado. The warm tones, textured materials, and carefully curated design elements evoke the cosy ambiance of a ski holiday, redefining the typical Parisian hotel experience.

Dubois’ design philosophy, influenced by photographers William Eggleston and Stephen Shore, revolves around creating immersive universes that tell captivating stories. The Bouchardon hotel stands as a testament to his ability to blend references from different eras and contexts, resulting in a space that is both timeless and unique.

With Bernard Dubois at the helm, the Bouchardon hotel sets a new standard for boutique hospitality in Paris, offering guests a retreat that is far from ordinary and close to extraordinary.
