Raes on Wategos Expands its Luxury Offering in Byron Bay

Under the lighthouse at Cape Byron, Australia’s most easterly point, an exciting new development is unfolding. Raes on Wategos, the exclusive boutique beachfront retreat beloved by celebrities and affluent travellers alike, is set to double its accommodation offerings.

The luxurious resort, owned by media entrepreneur Antony Catalano, will soon open a second property just 100 metres from the original at Wategos Beach. The new site, which will feature ten suites, will occupy the former Victoria’s at Wategos and is expected to open its doors in October after a significant rebranding and refurbishment.

This expansion will bring Raes’ total room count to 17, enhancing its ability to accommodate the consistently high demand for its unique brand of hospitality. Despite some rooms fetching over $3000 per night, Raes on Wategos often books out six months in advance. According to Jordy Catalano, increasing guest capacity was always part of the long-term plan. “Finding the right property was key, and this one has always been on our radar. Its design allows us to maintain the intimate, boutique feel that’s central to Raes’ identity,” he said.

The new property, a Tuscan-style retreat on a 1214 sqm Marine Parade site, includes several lounge areas and two heated lap pools, one of which features a waterfall. Jordy Catalano emphasised that the two distinct properties will offer guests more common spaces, preserving the intimate atmosphere Raes is known for.

The original Raes, which was refurbished in 2016 by acclaimed designer Tamsin Johnson, will see its minimalist and unpretentious coastal aesthetic carried through to the new site, creating a seamless experience between the two properties.

With the Bonobo by Raes also set to open next year, Raes is further solidifying its presence in Byron Bay, maintaining its position as one of the area’s most sought-after luxury destinations.
