Rugged Charm: The Longfellow Hotel by Post Company

The Longfellow Hotel in Portland, Maine, takes inspiration from the New England coast’s ever-changing climate and rugged beauty. Designed by New York-based Post Company, the boutique hotel blends traditional and contemporary design elements to create a refined yet welcoming retreat in the city’s West End.

Named after local poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the 48-room hotel is operated by Maine-based Uncommon Hospitality. “Much like the famed poet’s enduring words, the hotel reflects the location’s rugged charm and extremes of the environment – from cold, blustery winters to sun-soaked summer months,” said the hotel team.

The interiors establish a balance between historical references and modern sensibilities. The ground-floor lobby is a striking first impression, featuring high ceilings, rail and stile wall panelling, and tall windows that invite natural light. A lounge area is defined by turmeric-hued modular sofas that contrast against pale seafoam-green walls and black-and-white penny round flooring. Across the room, a large wooden dining table and various seating options provide versatile spaces for guests to work or unwind. Overhead, minimal brass chandeliers add warmth, while dark furniture and light fixtures juxtapose the off-white paintwork.

The hotel’s bar, Five of Clubs, sits at the far end of the lobby, backed by a statement mirror and surrounded by vintage artwork. Beyond this, the Twinflower Cafe offers a selection of coffee, pastries and breakfast dishes, while the Astraea spa provides a calming retreat with local granite surfaces, textured limewash walls, and natural wood flooring.

Guest rooms occupy the upper floors, where wide-plank oak floors meet monochromatic trim and mouldings. Black doors, closet pulls, and furniture elements contrast the otherwise soft palette. Custom headboards with scalloped tops and TRNK-designed chaise lounges upholstered in jewel-toned velvet add a touch of indulgence. On the top floor, a communal lounge offers a space for reading, board games, or quiet reflection.

In alignment with its eco-conscious ethos, The Longfellow Hotel incorporates sustainable initiatives such as complimentary bicycle rentals, an electric car service, zero single-use plastics, and all-electric appliances. The result is a destination that seamlessly blends historic charm with contemporary comfort, creating a hotel experience that is both grounded in place and designed for the modern traveller.
