Surf Revival: Roadside Motel Transformed into 1970s-inspired Sanctuary

An unassuming 1980s roadside motel in Crescent Head has been reimagined as a soulful tribute to 1970s surf culture, thanks to Gorrow Design Studio.

Now called Sea Sea Hotel, the site has undergone a meticulous transformation into a boutique hotel that pays homage to coastal nostalgia while embracing tactile, contemporary craftsmanship.

The project, led by studio founder George Gorrow and his wife Cisco Tschurtschenthaler, retains the idiosyncrasies of the original motel and conference centre—multi-pitched roofs, exposed rafters, sprawling single-level buildings—while layering in thoughtful materiality and artisan detail. The result is a “seaside sanctuary and community clubhouse” that celebrates a uniquely Australian beach-town identity.

Natural materials and textures are central to the design, evoking surf shacks, alpine cabins and bygone Balinese retreats. Inside the 25-room hotel, stained glass windows, brown brick walls and dark-stained pine panelling create an intentionally grounded atmosphere. Furniture sits low to the floor—cushions double as sofas, and custom retro speaker bedside tables (developed with furniture maker Torre) combine utility and playful design.

Handcrafted elements are a hallmark of the space, from red-light therapy wall sconces carved by sculptor Aleph Geddis to linen throws featuring bold calligraphy by artist Romon K Yang. Outside, crazy paving in silver travertine leads through the landscaped 6,000-square-metre property, connecting the guestrooms with a turquoise-tiled pool edged in cacti and pebbles.

The former conference spaces have been reborn as the hotel’s clubhouse, incorporating a listening bar with Gorrow’s own vintage Klipsch speakers, an art gallery, surf hire station, and a cocktail lounge spilling out onto the street.

More than a design statement, Sea Sea Hotel reflects a deep respect for place. “It had to feel lived-in, approachable and tactile,” says Gorrow. “Nothing is overly precious.” With its mix of barefoot luxury, community spirit and rich material detail, Sea Sea captures the spirit of Crescent Head’s surf culture—past and present.
