On Track for Luxury Train Interiors

When it comes to quality commercial interiors, the first thought that comes to mind is rarely transport. But all that has changed with Journey Beyond’s announcement of the first luxury sleeper suites in Australia, designed by Woods Bagot.

The ‘Aurora’ and ‘Australis’ suites will join iconic trains The Ghan, Indian Pacific and the Great Southern from April 2026, slated to be a new level of luxury travel outside the likes of the Orient Express. Drawing on the legacy of cross-country rail, the carriages reference the nostalgia and romance long associated with train travel.

The interior design incorporates Australian architectural motifs and details from the arts-and-crafts movement. The Premium carriages draw inspiration from Federation-style homes, a uniquely Australian expression of the English-Edwardian home.

The residential character and human-scale detailing of the carriages is designed to evoke an elevated familiarity, creating a sense of exclusivity and refined comfort. A rich and layered design is expressed through bespoke detailing, decorative timber accents, stone masonry, iron filigree and coved ceilings that reference traditional cornices.

The design emphasises the authenticity, heritage, functionality and connection to the outback that has come to characterise Australian refinement.

“’Australian luxury’ is defined by an understated aesthetic with bucolic sensibility and an adventurous spirit,” says Woods Bagot Principal Rosina Di Maria.

“In place of extravagant decoration and excessive opulence, Australian luxury is characterised by quiet confidence, quality, comfort, and attention to detail. The interiors are characterised by an artisanal, heritage-driven approach to detail, meticulous craftsmanship, and the widespread use of high-end materials.”

The tones of the outback are expertly worked into the schemes of the new sleeper suites. The Aurora draws from the celestial skyscape of the outback, from the shimmering lights of the southern skies to the dreamlike tones of the Australian aurora, while the Australis Suite incorporates a material palette inspired by the terra.

In the Aurora, mirrored surfaces, champagne steel and high-gloss finishes play with light and ephemera, referencing the shifting astronomical canvas of the Australian desert. Celestial green tones of the Southern Lights are incorporated in emerald quartzite and velvet upholstery.

Journey Beyond Chief Executive Chris Tallent says the Platinum suites represent a moving luxury like no other, setting a new benchmark in train travel that elevates Journey Beyond’s portfolio of luxury experiences in Australia.
