Crossroads Hotel set for $33M modern redevelopment

One of Australia’s most valuable pub assets, Liverpool’s Crossroads Hotel, is set for a major $33 million redevelopment, aimed at modernising the historic venue. Known for its long-standing presence in Western Sydney’s hospitality scene and its links to notorious events, the hotel is poised for a new chapter under the ownership of Sonnel Hospitality.

The venue, which has operated since the 1830s and was originally known as the Talbot Inn, has evolved alongside the region. Its current name, adopted in the 1880s, has since become a cornerstone of the local community. The site’s prominence grew in 2022 when it was sold for a record-breaking $160 million. However, the Crossroads Hotel also gained notoriety due to its associations with serial killer Ivan Milat and a significant Covid-19 outbreak.

Now under the stewardship of Sonnel Hospitality—formed after the rebrand of the Nelson Meers Group—the hotel is set to undergo a substantial transformation. The proposed redevelopment includes the addition of a 39-room short-stay accommodation wing, expanded dining and entertainment spaces, and redesigned outdoor areas.

Designed by H+E Architects, the plans also feature a revamped bistro, café, private dining areas, beer garden, lounge garden, courtyard, and a dedicated children’s space. The project aims to offer a more versatile venue, with new function spaces and operable walls for flexible event hosting, while addressing the surrounding environment with enhanced landscaping and a redesigned carpark.

As the hotel is located at the busy intersection of the Hume Highway and Camden Valley Way, the development also addresses noise concerns. An acoustic assessment aligned with Liquor and Gaming NSW regulations has recommended soundproofing measures to limit the impact on nearby residents.

The development’s timeline is contingent on additional investigations into potential land contamination, such as asbestos and petroleum hydrocarbons, flagged in a preliminary site investigation. Once resolved, construction is set to move forward.

The development application, lodged earlier this month, is under review by the Sydney Western City Planning Panel, with Liverpool City Council managing the approval process.

Sonnel Hospitality spokespersons have expressed confidence in the project’s potential to meet the needs of the growing Liverpool community, further cementing the Crossroads Hotel as a key venue in the region.
