Gurner’s $250M Luxury Resort in Port Douglas Receives Green Light

Gurner has received approval for an ambitious $250-million resort in Port Douglas, Queensland. This marks a significant milestone for the developer, following an unsuccessful initial foray into the Far North Queensland market. The resort, which includes six innovative “underwater” aquarium rooms, is set to elevate Port Douglas as a premier tourist destination.

On May 2, Gurner announced that a planning permit had been granted for the luxury resort, which will feature 112 hotel rooms and amenities inspired by the European beach clubs of Saint Tropez and the Greek islands. Port Douglas-based Hunt Design has crafted the three-storey design for the expansive 26,000-square-metre site at 91-113 Davidson Road.

The development also includes 44 ultra-luxury townhomes, offering seven different villa types that can serve both short-term and permanent accommodation needs. This project represents a significant upgrade from Gurner’s previous plans for an 18-key boutique hotel and 16 apartments at 69-73 Murphy Street, which did not come to fruition due to complications with a road reserve closure.

Tim Gurner, chief executive of Gurner Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting his personal connection to Port Douglas. “The incredible area is crying out for some amazing accommodation that highlights its natural beauty, which is what inspired the design of our luxury wellness experience that locals will be proud of,” Gurner said. “We believe it will put the town back on the map as the pre-eminent destination for tourism.”

The resort will feature 26,000 square metres of landscaped grounds and 3,000 square metres of outdoor amenities, including a striking blue lagoon that the aquarium rooms will face. Additional features include bars, restaurants, a day spa, and a gym, all designed to create a comprehensive luxury experience.

Gurner emphasised the collaborative effort with the Douglas Shire Council in bringing this project to life. “We have worked closely with the Gurner and Douglas Shire Council teams to ensure the finished product aligns with council preferences, and we believe this project will set a new benchmark for luxury accommodation in the region,” he stated. “By working closely with the council within the planning scheme and incorporating feedback from stakeholders, Gurner has created a well-rounded application that not only meets regulatory requirements.”

Construction on the new resort is expected to commence in the coming months, positioning Port Douglas as a renewed focal point for luxury tourism in Queensland.
