The Harmony of Heritage and Design at Zhichang Coffee

Nestled within the historic Weiyang Palace site of Han Chang’an City, Zhichang Coffee at Mihe Farm in Xi’an seamlessly integrates heritage, modernity, and nature. This café is more than just a space for coffee—it is a symbol of how design can harmonise preservation with contemporary living.

Mihe Farm, located in Lixiahao Village, has preserved the rustic charm of the area while catering to modern urbanites seeking a connection to nature. Zhichang Coffee, perched on a highland at the heart of the farm, maximises the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The design of the café takes inspiration from the site’s natural terrain and the unique triangular open space formed by the existing tree cover. The resulting triangular prism-shaped structure creates a striking architectural form that blends seamlessly into its surroundings.

The building, crafted primarily from steel and glass, embodies the concept of a “container of light.” Its south-facing transparent facade invites the farm’s verdant scenery indoors, ensuring a bright and airy interior during the day. At night, the café transforms into a “lighthouse,” with light strips and illuminated glass facades adding a gentle glow to the landscape.

Designers have thoughtfully incorporated natural materials, including cedar wood chips on the eastern facade. Their layered arrangement creates a gradient of earthy tones, echoing the farm’s pastoral aesthetic. A horizontal window on the west side frames the lush greenery, further connecting patrons to the environment.

Inside, the café combines functionality and artistry. Beyond serving coffee, the space houses a coffee bean retail area and an art shop. A spiral staircase, flanked by art displays, adds visual intrigue. Trees planted indoors, in compliance with site regulations, enhance the café’s integration with nature, while the seating area offers a serene escape.

Zhichang Coffee exemplifies the balance between site preservation and modern development, celebrating the richness of local culture while providing a contemporary retreat. It stands as a model for how architecture can honour history while embracing the future.
