Immersive Light: Worc's Polycarbonate Wonderland for Yoozoo

Mexican architecture studio Worc has reimagined the boba tea experience with an immersive, light-driven design for Yoozoo in Mexico City.

Using translucent polycarbonate walls and dynamic lighting, the studio has created a space that evolves throughout the day, drawing visitors into an ever-changing sensory landscape.

Wrapped entirely in polycarbonate, the shop’s facade functions as a light diffuser, manipulating both natural and artificial light to create a shifting ambience. By night, the store glows with a bright, radiant aura, enticing passersby into its luminous interior.

Upon entering, customers step into a corridor that gradually immerses them in the space, leading from the ordering area to a concealed seating zone. This hidden section, unseen from the entrance, unfolds as an unexpected, welcoming retreat from the bustling city streets.

“The idea was to deliver an absolutely unexpected space,” said Worc. “This final space, which is never visible at any point from the corridor, suddenly reveals itself in a spacious and welcoming spirit that disconnects you from the busy street.”

At the heart of Yoozoo, suspended from the ceiling, is a striking sculptural light installation by artists Lucía Aumann and Pablo Kobayashi. Designed to shift in both form and colour, it creates a sense of movement, with abstract shapes that mirror boba pearls.

“We wanted the space to feel alive, and nothing does that better than movement,” Worc explained. “The light piece emits a soft glow and creates changing shadows, with the shapes inside mimicking boba pearls.”

Polycarbonate plays a defining role in the store’s identity, chosen for its contemporary appeal and ability to diffuse light. “We wanted a material that conveyed the young, dynamic and technological spirit of the brand,” said Worc. “Something that would collaborate with translucent visuals as an honest display of personality and contemporaneity, while elevating the space and its experience.”

Extensive testing of polycarbonate thicknesses and curvatures allowed Worc to fine-tune the lighting effects. Complementary materials—including metal structures, gloss-painted plastic window casings, and stainless steel furniture—enhance the futuristic aesthetic.

Adding an element of playfulness, the store incorporates interactive features such as a backlit mirror in the corridor, deemed the “perfect selfie spot,” and a circular opening in the seating area offering glimpses into the kitchen. A hidden bathroom, with a unique personality of its own, adds a touch of mystery.

“There’s a secret bathroom with its own distinct personality – we challenge visitors to find it,” Worc teased.

With its experimental use of materials and lighting, Yoozoo by Worc redefines what a boba tea shop can be—an immersive, ever-changing experience that blends design, technology and playfulness into a single, glowing entity.
