Situated above the atelier of renowned sculptor Antoine Bourdelle within the Musée Bourdelle, the newly opened café-restaurant, Le Rhodia, offers more than just a meal—it delivers an immersive design experience. Named after Bourdelle’s daughter, the space aspires to serve as a sanctuary for museum visitors, employees, and locals alike.
Designed by SAME, the project takes a holistic approach, blending custom craftsmanship and artistic inspiration. The luminous yellow and white interiors, restored by Paris Musées to their original state, provide the canvas for a scenographic masterpiece. Geo-based materials, including stone, clay, and wood, pay homage to Bourdelle’s sculptural practice, while vintage and contemporary design elements create a layered and inviting aesthetic.
The interior layout features a mix of intimate and communal dining spaces. Semicircular travertine tables, strategically positioned at the room’s cardinal points, accommodate smaller groups, while the centre is dominated by two striking family tables. Crafted from ceramic and wood, these tables incorporate legs sculpted by ceramist Cyril Dennery using vernacular techniques, giving the organic supports a tactile, earthy presence. Complementing this are mid-century chairs by designers Olavi Hänninen and Pierre Gautier Delaye, which add a touch of 1950s charm.
Lighting fixtures by Céline Wright, handmade in the Parisian region, provide a contemporary contrast, softening the space with a warm glow. Outdoors, an L-shaped terrace overlooking the museum’s garden invites patrons to enjoy a serene environment. Minimalist metal furniture ensures the terrace’s design harmonises with the surrounding artworks and architectural details.
Le Rhodia’s design achieves a delicate balance between history and modernity. By reflecting Bourdelle’s legacy while embracing the present, it offers a unique dining experience that ties together art, craftsmanship, and community. Visitors can savour not only the menu but also the space itself—an homage to the creative spirit of Montparnasse.
