New Heights: Suspended see-through office building over plaza in Munich

UniCredit HQ Munich, a visionary project designed by OMA, is set to transform a lackluster area adjacent to a train station in Munich into a vibrant urban hub.

The innovative design seeks to counter the city’s “loss of soul” issue by infusing it with new vitality and creating a seamless integration with the surrounding environment.

At the heart of the project lies an elevated structure that not only extends accessible space into its interior but also boasts a stunning transparent silhouette.

This unique feature not only adds a touch of architectural brilliance but also allows the building to harmoniously blend in with its surroundings. As a result, the UniCredit HQ serves as a vital connection point between the Leuchtenbergring S-Bahn stop and the soon-to-be-developed central neighborhood garden, further enhancing the accessibility and connectivity of the area.

One of the project’s standout features is the creation of a central plaza, thoughtfully designed as an inviting “urban living room” for the local community. The plaza serves as a meeting point for residents and visitors alike, fostering a sense of community and enhancing the overall livability of the area. It is not merely a commercial space but rather an open and inclusive public space that contributes positively to the city’s social fabric.

Taking full advantage of the available space, the OMA design ingeniously utilizes the area beneath the plaza to accommodate various essential facilities. These include the main restaurant, gastronomy areas, the bank’s meeting center, and logistical functions with easy ground-level access. This clever use of space not only ensures that the building meets its functional requirements but also effortlessly contributes to the expansion of public space within the city.

The UniCredit HQ Munich project exemplifies the merging of architectural brilliance and practical urban planning, setting a new standard for modern development. It not only addresses the immediate needs of the bank but also thoughtfully considers the needs and desires of the wider community. By creating a harmonious connection between different parts of the city and providing a public space that fosters a sense of belonging, the project promises to rejuvenate Munich’s urban landscape and restore the city’s lost vitality.

As the UniCredit HQ Munich project progresses, it is sure to serve as a shining example of how innovative design and thoughtful urban planning can come together to shape a city’s future. With its transparent trapezoidal office suspended over a lively plaza, the project is destined to become an iconic landmark, redefining the urban experience in Munich for years to come.
