Japanese Forest Retreat Designed for Ultimate Seclusion

Nestled in the heart of Japan’s Gunma Prefecture, the newly opened NOT A HOTEL KITAKARUIZAWA IRORI invites guests to embrace tranquillity and timeless Japanese design.

Set amid a 20,000-square-metre forest, this intimate getaway combines minimalist architecture with nature-centric experiences, crafting a serene escape just hours from Tokyo.

GALLERY

The retreat centres on the irori—a traditional Japanese sunken hearth that lends its name and essence to the property. Positioned in the main living-dining area, the irori offers a rustic warmth, while floor-to-ceiling windows allow uninterrupted views of the surrounding forest. This oasis of wood and glass provides an intimate yet expansive setting, comfortably accommodating gatherings of up to eight around the large dining table. Guests are encouraged to fully immerse in the tranquil surroundings, with private irori-cooked dinners set against a backdrop of flickering flames and towering trees.

Designed with both relaxation and functionality in mind, the retreat features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Each bedroom is equipped with a spacious desk, ideal for quiet contemplation or focused work, while the bathrooms offer spa-inspired amenities. A unique stone bath, carved from a large rock, fills with rejuvenating natural hot spring water, creating a semi-open-air bath experience when doors are opened to the surrounding forest. Completing the bathing experience are a sauna, cold bath, and an outdoor relaxation area, adding a distinct touch of luxury to this hidden haven.

The retreat comprises two structures, one of which is pet-friendly, including a dog run for guests with pets. The design’s harmonious flow extends outdoors, where a large terrace invites guests to embrace the calming forest air, creating a seamless connection with nature.

Accessing NOT A HOTEL KITAKARUIZAWA IRORI is as straightforward as the design. Guests can take a 75-minute train from Tokyo to Karuizawa Station, followed by a 35-minute car ride, or drive directly from Tokyo, arriving in approximately three hours.

Combining contemporary style with traditional elements, NOT A HOTEL KITAKARUIZAWA IRORI presents a thoughtfully curated Japanese escape—perfect for those seeking a refined, nature-infused retreat.
