Tranquil Retreat: Monos’ Toronto Store Brings a Spa-like Calm

Canadian studio Ste Marie has infused a serene, spa-like atmosphere into the new Monos store in Toronto, using waxed plaster walls, rainbow onyx surfaces, and a striking olive tree to shape a space that embodies travel, discovery, and tranquillity.

Situated on Ossington Street, just a few blocks from Little Portugal, the store draws inspiration from the Japanese concept of “mono no aware”—the appreciation of fleeting beauty.

The design is also informed by the warmth of Portuguese pousadas, traditional bed and breakfasts known for their hospitality.

“The space invites guests to embark on a multi-sensory journey that connects them to moments of awe, discovery and the joy we crave with travel,” said Ste Marie, which operates studios in Toronto and Vancouver.

A central counter, crafted from Turkish rainbow onyx with striking veins of blue-grey and orange, serves as a focal point. A raised water feature flows from its surface, cascading into a lower basin at the store’s front—an element designed to evoke a natural connection between humanity and nature.

An olive tree, positioned against a vertical light box that extends across the ceiling, anchors the store’s core, enhancing the sense of calm. This feature is framed by waxed plaster walls and imposing monoliths of split-faced cottonwood limestone, adding layers of texture and depth.

The minimalist palette of warm beige extends across walls, ceilings, and flooring, ensuring cohesion. Stone display shelves, softly illuminated by cove lighting, showcase Monos’ thoughtfully curated collection of luggage and travel accessories. Italian Onice Striato Avorio stone subtly accents the encased niches, reinforcing the store’s refined aesthetic.

To further enhance the immersive experience, full-length mirrors in the corners create an expansive feel, while taupe curtains discreetly conceal back-of-house areas.

With its blend of tactile materials, fluid elements, and subdued lighting, Monos’ Toronto flagship reflects a sophisticated, sensory-driven approach to retail—one that transports visitors into a state of quiet luxury, much like the journeys their luggage is designed to accompany.
